About the Salzburg map

a baroque old town pinned between river and rock

Salzburg is a lesson in how geography makes a city. The Salzach draws a tight S-curve through the frame, and the baroque Altstadt is squeezed into the sliver between the river and the sheer green wall of the Mönchsberg, with the Hohensalzburg fortress crowning the ridge above it.

Across the water, the right bank spreads out more calmly around the Mirabell gardens, while the wooded mass of the Kapuzinerberg pushes back against the streets from the east. Two hills, one river, a lattice of lanes like the Getreidegasse in between — few maps this small carry this much drama.

Midnight Blue: the fortress and the old town glowing against an alpine night.

Centre on the Hohensalzburg Fortress with a 3 km radius: the S-curve of the Salzach, the Altstadt, the Mirabell gardens and both wooded hills all fit inside one intimate, perfectly balanced frame.
