About the Marrakech map
the medina's labyrinth on your wall
Marrakech's map is a study in organised chaos. The medina, the old walled city, is a labyrinth of alleys so intricate that it looks almost like a fingerprint from above. Outside the walls, the Ville Nouvelle follows a French colonial grid, and the contrast between the two is startling and beautiful.
Jemaa el-Fnaa sits at the heart, a roughly triangular open space surrounded by the tightest concentration of streets on the map. The Majorelle Garden is a small green square to the north-west; the Agdal Gardens and the royal palace stretch south, geometric and vast. It rewards close inspection at every zoom level.
Set the radius to just 3 km and centre on Jemaa el-Fnaa: the medina fills the poster with extraordinary density, and the grid outside the walls provides the contrast people stare at for minutes.
