Geneva Map Poster: where the Rhône leaves the lake

Why Geneva works so well as a map poster

Geneva's map is built around a single dramatic moment: Lake Geneva narrowing into the Rhône. The harbour with the Jet d'Eau, the bridges stitching the two banks together, the river splitting around the Île Rousseau — everything funnels through that point, and it makes a natural centre for a poster.

On the left bank, the old town coils around its hill above the Rues Basses; downstream, the Arve joins the Rhône at La Jonction in a sharp confluence; to the north, the parks of the international quarter climb towards the Palais des Nations. Water, hills and diplomacy, all on one sheet.

Best palettes for Geneva

  • Ocean — the signature pick: lake and river blues doing exactly what Geneva's geography asks for.
  • Midnight Blue — deep navy with luminous streets, like the harbour lights reflected on the lake at night.
  • Warm Beige — discreet and refined; very Swiss, very at home in a calm interior.

Where to centre the map and which radius to use

Centre on the Jet d'Eau with a 5 km radius: the lake tapering into the Rhône, the old town hill, the Arve confluence at La Jonction and the international quarter all fit in one balanced frame.

Which size to print

City maps with lots of fine streets reward size: 30×40 cm is the sweet spot for a desk or hallway, 50×70 cm and 60×90 cm turn the map into a statement piece where individual streets remain legible from across the room. Stick to matte paper so the dark palettes do not reflect. Read the printing and framing guide.
