Seoul Map Poster: mountains, river and mega-city energy

Why Seoul works so well as a map poster

Seoul's map tells the story of a city built between mountains and a river. The Han cuts horizontally through the centre, wide and bridged dozens of times, with the islands of Yeouido and Nodeul midstream. To the north, Bukhansan makes a mountainous edge where the city simply stops; to the south, Gangnam's grid stretches endlessly.

The contrast between the two halves is fascinating: north of the Han, older, organic streets cluster around Gyeongbokgung and the hanok lanes of Bukchon and Insadong; south of the river, the wide boulevards and apartment complexes built from the 1970s on create a completely different texture.

Best palettes for Seoul

  • Japanese Ink — the sumi-e style belongs to an East Asian ink tradition shared across the region; it turns mountains and river into art.
  • Neon Cyberpunk — K-pop, PC bangs and LED-lit streets: the city's alter ego.
  • Forest — the mountains are Seoul's secret weapon; Bukhansan, Namsan and the Han parks come alive.

Where to centre the map and which radius to use

Use a 7 km radius centred on Yongsan to capture both banks of the Han, the mountains to the north and the full breadth of the bridges; the horizontal river gives the poster a balanced, cinematic split.

Which size to print

City maps with lots of fine streets reward size: 30×40 cm is the sweet spot for a desk or hallway, 50×70 cm and 60×90 cm turn the map into a statement piece where individual streets remain legible from across the room. Stick to matte paper so the dark palettes do not reflect. Read the printing and framing guide.
