Bilbao Map Poster: the ría, the Ensanche and the green hills of Biscay
Why Bilbao works so well as a map poster
Bilbao is drawn by its ría. The Nervión snakes through a narrow valley and every neighbourhood answers to it: the Casco Viejo's Seven Streets packed into the first bend, the elegant fan of the Ensanche filling the loop opposite, and the Guggenheim sitting right where the river straightens towards the sea.
What frames it all is the terrain. Green slopes rise steeply on both sides, Artxanda to the north and the Pagasarri foothills to the south, so the city reads as a ribbon of dense streets pressed into the valley floor, one of the most distinctive silhouettes in Spain.
Best palettes for Bilbao
- Emerald City — the signature pick: deep Basque greens for the hills that hem the city in.
- Blueprint — technical lines that nod to the shipyards and blast furnaces the ría was built on.
- Noir — black on black, with the Nervión as a dark silver thread through the middle.
Where to centre the map and which radius to use
Centre on the Guggenheim with a 4 km radius: both banks of the Nervión, the Casco Viejo, the whole Ensanche fan and the first green slopes of Artxanda share one tight frame.

Which size to print
City maps with lots of fine streets reward size: 30×40 cm is the sweet spot for a desk or hallway, 50×70 cm and 60×90 cm turn the map into a statement piece where individual streets remain legible from across the room. Stick to matte paper so the dark palettes do not reflect. Read the printing and framing guide.
