Printing Guide
Your MapToArt file is print-ready out of the box. This guide covers paper choices, sizing, where to print, framing, and color accuracy so the poster on your wall looks exactly as you envisioned it.
The right paper makes a significant difference in how your map poster looks and feels. Here are the three most common options for art prints.
Matte paper in the 200-250 gsm range is the best all-around choice for map posters. It eliminates glare under any lighting, reproduces fine street detail with crisp edges, and gives the print a sophisticated, gallery-quality feel. Most professional print shops default to heavyweight matte for art prints, and for good reason.
Glossy paper delivers vivid, saturated colors and high contrast, which can make dark-themed posters look especially striking. The trade-off is glare: under direct lighting or near windows, reflections can obscure parts of the image. If you choose glossy, consider a frame with anti-reflective glass.
For a museum-quality result, fine art paper (sometimes called cotton rag or archival paper) offers a subtly textured surface with exceptional color depth. It is the most expensive option but produces prints that age beautifully and resist fading for decades. Best paired with giclée printing.
MapToArt supports a range of standard paper sizes. Choosing the right size depends on where you plan to hang the poster and how far away viewers will stand. Larger prints need more wall space and greater viewing distance to be appreciated fully.
| Size | Dimensions | Best For | Viewing Distance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8″ × 10″ | 20 × 25 cm | Desk, shelf, or nightstand | 0.5 - 1 m |
| A4 | 21 × 29.7 cm | Desk, small gallery wall | 0.5 - 1 m |
| 11″ × 14″ | 28 × 35.5 cm | Small wall accent | 0.7 - 1.2 m |
| A3 | 29.7 × 42 cm | Home office, bedroom | 1 - 1.5 m |
| 16″ × 20″ | 40.6 × 50.8 cm | Living room, hallway | 1.2 - 2 m |
| A2 | 42 × 59.4 cm | Statement piece, living room | 1.5 - 2.5 m |
| A1 | 59.4 × 84.1 cm | Large wall, corridor | 2 - 3 m |
| A0 | 84.1 × 118.9 cm | Feature wall, studio | 3+ m |
You have two main options for turning your digital file into a physical print. Both work well; the best choice depends on your budget and timeline.
Online printing services let you upload your file and receive a finished print by mail, often within a few days. Many offer a range of paper stocks, sizes, and finishing options. Look for services that specialize in photo or art prints rather than general document printing, since they use higher-quality inks and paper.
A local print shop gives you the advantage of seeing and touching paper samples before committing. You can discuss paper weight, finish, and color profiles with the staff. This is especially valuable for large-format prints (A1 and above) where shipping costs from online services can be significant.
The right frame elevates a map poster from print to art piece. Map posters work best with clean, understated framing that lets the geometry speak for itself.
A mat (or mount) adds a border of white or neutral space between the print and the frame. For map posters, a 5-8 cm mat in white or off-white draws the eye inward and gives the piece breathing room. Matting also protects the print from touching the glass, which prevents moisture damage over time.
Every screen displays colors slightly differently, and printed colors will never match a screen exactly. This is normal and expected. Monitors emit light (RGB), while prints reflect light (CMYK), so there is always a subtle shift in how colors appear.
If color accuracy is critical to you, consider requesting a proof print, a small test print on the same paper you plan to use for the final poster. Most print shops offer proofs for a small fee. This lets you see the actual colors before committing to a full-size print.

Getting the best results from your print depends on choosing the right combination of paper weight, finish, and file format for your specific poster size.
For poster prints, choose paper in the 200–300 gsm range. Lightweight paper (under 170 gsm) will curl, wrinkle, and feel flimsy. Heavier stock (250–300 gsm) is ideal for large formats (A2 and above) as it hangs flat and resists warping. For smaller sizes (A4–A3), 200–250 gsm is sufficient.
Matte finish is recommended for most map posters. It eliminates glare, making the poster viewable from any angle and under any lighting. Glossy finish enhances colour saturation and contrast, which can benefit dark-themed designs, but introduces reflections that can be distracting. Semi-gloss (also called satin or lustre) is a good middle ground if you want slightly richer colours without heavy glare.
Always leave the poster flat or gently rolled (print side out) until framing. Never fold a print. For prints on heavier paper (250+ gsm), a simple poster hanger or magnetic frame works well without glass. For lighter paper or long-term display, a proper frame with glass or acrylic protects against dust, moisture, and UV fading.
Your MapToArt poster is delivered as a high-resolution PNG at 300 DPI. PNG is universally accepted and preserves every detail. If a print shop specifically requests PDF, you can convert the PNG without quality loss using any image editor or online converter. Some professional labs prefer PDF for colour management, but PNG will produce excellent results at any print shop.
