Delhi Map Poster: Mughal lanes meet Lutyens' geometry

Why Delhi works so well as a map poster

Delhi is two cities on one map. To the north, Old Delhi: the dense Mughal-era tangle around Chandni Chowk, the Jama Masjid and the Red Fort, where lanes knot together so tightly they read as texture. To the south, Lutyens' New Delhi: enormous hexagons and radial avenues converging on India Gate and sweeping down Kartavya Path, one of the most deliberate pieces of urban geometry ever drawn.

A Delhi map poster lives off that collision. The concentric double ring of Connaught Place sits between the two worlds like a bullseye, the Yamuna traces the eastern edge, and the wooded Ridge pushes in from the west. Few capitals show their whole history this clearly from above.

Best palettes for Delhi

  • Terracotta — the signature pick: warm earth tones that echo the red sandstone of the forts and Delhi's dusty golden light.
  • Midnight Blue — deep navy with glowing streets; Lutyens' avenues look like constellations at night.
  • Warm Beige — soft and understated, letting the contrast between old and new city carry the print.

Where to centre the map and which radius to use

Centre on Connaught Place with an 8 km radius: the frame takes in Old Delhi's tangle, the Red Fort, India Gate, the hexagons of Lutyens' city and a stretch of the Yamuna in one balanced composition.

Which size to print

City maps with lots of fine streets reward size: 30×40 cm is the sweet spot for a desk or hallway, 50×70 cm and 60×90 cm turn the map into a statement piece where individual streets remain legible from across the room. Stick to matte paper so the dark palettes do not reflect. Read the printing and framing guide.
