About the Hamburg map

two lakes, a harbour and a thousand canals

Hamburg has more bridges than Venice and Amsterdam combined, and its map shows why: the Alster lakes sit like two blue jewels in the middle of the city, the Elbe sprawls across the bottom of the frame, and the Speicherstadt's canals stitch the harbour to the centre.

It is a composition of water and trade: the tight Altstadt wedged between lake and river, docks and container terminals fanning out west, and leafy Alster suburbs mirrored in the water to the north.

Ocean: made for Hamburg: blues and teals for a city that lives on water.

Centre on the Binnenalster with a 6 km radius so both lakes, the harbour and the Elbe islands share the frame. The water does the composing for you — Hamburg is one of the easiest cities to make look spectacular.
