About the Venice map
a fish-shaped labyrinth floating on the lagoon
No city map is as instantly recognisable as Venice: the fish-shaped island, the Grand Canal curving through it like a reversed S, and around it the emptiness of the lagoon. There are no roads at all — every line on the map is an alley, a campo or a canal.
That is what makes a Venice poster unique. The water isn't background, it is half the composition: Giudecca, Murano and the lagoon's edge float in negative space, and the density of the calli makes the island glow like lace.
Blueprint: the signature look for Venice — white lines on deep blue, as if the lagoon drew its own chart.
Centre on the Rialto Bridge with a 3 km radius so the whole fish fits with Giudecca below and Murano peeking in above. Venice is one of the few cities that genuinely wants a landscape frame — the lagoon needs room at the sides.
