Granada Map Poster: the Alhambra, the Albaicín and the Darro
Why Granada works so well as a map poster
Granada's map is a study in contrasts drawn by two hills and a river. The Alhambra sits on its wooded ridge above the narrow valley of the Darro, and facing it across the water climbs the Albaicín, a Moorish tangle of lanes so dense it reads like lace from above.
Below them, the lower town spreads out around the Cathedral in a looser, more ordered weave, out to the tree-lined banks of the Genil. Poplar groves, carmen gardens and the first folds of the Sierra Nevada frame the edges. Few small cities pack this much drama into four kilometres.
Best palettes for Granada
- Terracotta — the signature pick: warm reds and earth tones straight out of the Alhambra's walls at sunset.
- Warm Beige — soft and timeless; lets the Albaicín's lacework be the whole story.
- Midnight Blue — deep blue with glowing lanes, like Granada seen from the Mirador de San Nicolás at night.
Where to centre the map and which radius to use
Centre on the Cathedral with a 4 km radius: the Alhambra hill, the whole Albaicín, the Darro valley and the banks of the Genil all fit, with the old city filling the frame edge to edge.

Which size to print
City maps with lots of fine streets reward size: 30×40 cm is the sweet spot for a desk or hallway, 50×70 cm and 60×90 cm turn the map into a statement piece where individual streets remain legible from across the room. Stick to matte paper so the dark palettes do not reflect. Read the printing and framing guide.
